All my life I’ve been a good girl. I’ve always played by the rules, done my homework on time and eaten all my vegetables. No one would ever mistake me for any kind of troublemaker or risk-taker. Except of course, in my fantasies…
In my secret life, the one that exists only in my imagination, I’m Katniss Everdeen. I fight for what’s right and defend the powerless. I take charge and get it done, with no mercy for those who stand in my way.
And of course, in my fantasy life I do it in killer style. In real life I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. No one would ever mistake me for a rebel in my olive cargo pants, no matter how similar they are to the ones Katniss wears in the first movie. A major difference is I carry a wallet and cell phone while Katniss carries a bow and quiver of arrows.
It’s not that I’m trying to fool anyone. I know that wearing my leather bomber jacket doesn’t turn me into a test pilot like Carol Ferris. To any casual observer it looks like I’m driving to the supermarket in my reliable mid-size sedan. That’s okay. No one has to know that in my fantasy life I’m actually guiding my stealth jet into restricted airspace to steal top-secret plans.
And yes, it’s true that in real life I’m tone deaf, and I silently mouth the words to the national anthem so that I don’t offend the ears of people standing nearby. But in my mind, I’m “Lady T,” in leather and lace, rocking the mic onstage and the red carpet offstage.
Sometimes rebels and rule breakers look a little different than everyone else. They don’t care. They don’t let anything keep them from being who they’re meant to be. And sometimes they don’t wear cool outfits or have supernatural abilities. Sometimes they’re just the first one to walk through a particular door. That can take even more courage than facing down a pack of werewolves.
There are many different ways to be a rebel, renegade or a rule breaker, and I highly recommend trying it. It’s important every once in a while to color outside the lines. (Plus it’s also a lot of fun.) When the DVD of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is released on March 7th, it will look like I’m sitting on my couch, watching a movie. But you know where I’ll really be, right? Yep – I’ll be in the arena, defending my title and fighting against the oppressors! Who’s with me?!
