BarbieCollector.com chatted with Ms. Acra about fashion, inspiration, and naturally - Barbie® doll!

BC: Thanks so much for talking to us today! Why did you gravitate toward bridal and evening wear as your design niche? RA: You know, I am a strong believer in destiny. I made my first wedding dress for a good friend of mine. That geared me to start my own company designing wedding gowns. Eventually, that took me in the direction of evening wear too, because all the buyers from Neiman Marcus, Saks and Bergdorf Goodman began asking for an evening collection. It was a natural evolution, and a matter of destiny.

BC: What is your fashion philosophy? RA: I am very detail-oriented. My designs are all about embellishments that are very refined. I gravitate toward embroidery and beading that's done in a very delicate way. The look is simple, but it's a lot more complicated than initially meets the eye. It is a sophisticated look with a touch of elegance and embroidery.

BC: The embroidery and beading on your dresses are stunning, and you applied the same kind of intricate detailing to the Reem Acra® Bride Barbie® doll. Was it difficult to translate your designs on such a small scale? RA: Already, the embroidery on my dresses is very delicate and small. So to go even smaller was a fun challenge. It was interesting to see how it evolved. We actually found little sequins that were almost the same style as those on the real dresses. It was certainly a challenge, but exciting to execute.

BC: What do you think about Barbie®, and the convergence of the doll with fashion through the years? RA: Barbie® is a very important element in a girl's life, including mine - I remember my first Barbie® doll well! It is every girl's dream to have one and dress one. To me, Barbie® is a fashion diva who knows and wears practically every great designer!

BC: Did you ever think you would design a gown for Barbie® doll? RA: I've wanted to design a Barbie® dress for a while, and this was the right moment to do so. I am very happy with the final result - it is the perfect dress to put her in. I envision Barbie® getting married in an over-the-top gown, and I think we achieved that. The doll's dress is based on one of my actual designs and it even has a bodysuit underneath. I think the execution turned out well.
