They always save the best for last! On September 13, the final day of New York Fashion Week, an excited crowd of fashion cognoscenti — designers, models, photographers, and invited guests — gathered on the lawn of The Out NYC Resort in Hell’s Kitchen. The eagerly anticipated event? Designer Stephen Burrows’ Spring 2013 Fashion Show, featuring his pièce de résistance, the debut of Stephen Burrows Pazette™ Barbie® Doll!
Attendees clamored to catch a glimpse and snap some pics of Pazette Barbie in her mirrored display case, as Burrows — looking casually cool in black tee and gray slacks — chatted with us about his first-ever collaboration with Mattel. “I was honored to be asked to do a Collector’s Edition,” he said. “It’s been a joy.”
The CFDA-honored designer has supplied plenty of sartorial joy during his illustrious 45-year career. The first African-American designer to achieve international acclaim, Burrows has outfitted such luminaries as Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Cher, Lauren Bacall, and First Lady Michelle Obama. Now he can add Barbie to that legendary list!
While creating his design for Pazette Barbie doll, Burrows turned to two icons for inspiration: “The first thing I thought of was Josephine Baker and my muse, [model] Pat Cleveland.” The end result is extraordinary — Barbie dazzles in a daring nude bodysuit dripping with silvery glitter, rhinestones, and sequins. “She looks…blinged-out,” Burrows said proudly, “which is what I wanted from the beginning.”
Topping off her show-stopping ensemble is a shimmering headpiece with a cascade of white feathers. The dramatic headdress, Burrows explained, “was inspired by Josephine Baker at the Battle of Versailles [fashion show] in 1973.” The lavish look provides a striking contrast to Barbie doll’s gorgeous deep skin tone and dark hair pulled into an elegant chignon.
The ultimate pairing of a renowned designer and a style icon, Stephen Burrows Pazette™ Barbie® Doll made the perfect grand — and glam — finale to a thrilling week of fashion in the Big Apple. As special guest and fellow designer Phillip Bloch enthused, “Barbie is timeless, Stephen Burrows is timeless, and Fashion Week is timeless!”
