The Amazing (Hidden) Power of Emerald Green

Do you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (traditionally March 17th) by wearing green, like Ireland Barbie® Doll? If so, you’re not only showing spirit, you’re also showing style, because gorgeous emerald – officially, Pantone 17-5641 – is the 2013 color of the year!

Described on the Pantone site as “a lively, radiant, lush green,” emerald is a rich jewel tone that packs a powerful and fashionable punch. Even if you prefer not to wear this color near your face, you can still get in on the green goodness by using it in a belt, bag, or pair of shoes!

Have you ever wondered where the tradition of wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day comes from, or why people get pinched for not wearing it? One look at the verdant landscape of Ireland should answer the first question. Renowned for its rich pastures and lush rolling hills, Ireland rightfully earns the nickname “The Emerald Isle.” It’s no surprise that so many Barbie® dolls inspired by Irish culture feature various shades of green, including the rich lushness of the Deirdre of Ulster Barbie® Doll, the ethereal luminosity of the Faerie Queen Barbie® Doll, and the regal elegance of the Spellbound Lover Barbie® Doll. Of course, you don’t have to be Irish to wear green, and it looks particularly good on redheads!

As for the pinching? That’s easy… wearing green makes you invisible to leprechauns, of course. Those mischievous sprites delight in punishing anyone they think is not showing enough Irish spirit, and a pinch from a coworker is just a friendly reminder to find something green to wear… so you don’t get pinched. (Don’t think too hard about the logic of it all; it makes about as much sense as a green bagel, green milkshake, or green beer.)

It’s clear the key to being fashionably on-trend this year is as simple as adding a few emerald accessories to your wardrobe… with the added bonus of year-round protection from leprechauns. Now that’s fashion with a real purpose!

Do you have a favorite Barbie® doll inspired by a particular country or culture? We’d love to hear about it!
